The rollout of issues into Phase III of the NYSE Hybrid Market resumes next Tuesday, Nov. 28 with Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and Omnicom Group Inc. (OMC). That will bring our total to 245 issues.
Here is the updated list, in .pdf and Excel formats.
By Tuesday, we all should have recovered from that stuff that's in turkey that makes you sleepy. Actually, I was just surfing for the name of that stuff so I could sound real smart, and accidentally learned something, from HowStuffWorks.com. What makes you sleepy after the feast is not the amino acid tryptophan that's in turkey, nor the calming seratonin that tryptophan helps your body produce; tryptophan works best on an empty stomach.
It is the whole traditional Thanksgiving meal that can produce that after-dinner lethargy. The meal is quite often heavy and high in carbohydrates -- from mashed potatoes, bread, stuffing and pie -- and your body is working hard to digest that food. Also, if you drink alcohol with your dinner, you will likely feel its sedative effect, too.
There is a way to take advantage of the tryptophan in turkey. If you have trouble getting to sleep one night while there is still leftover turkey in the refrigerator, you could have a late snack of turkey and that, nutritionists say, might be the right amount of tryptophan on an empty stomach to help produce some serotonin.
Now I sound like John Tesh's radio show. "Intelligence for your life." Ugh. Always makes me feel inadequate that I'm not eating the right food to grow bigger brain cells, reading to my children in different languages, or doing memory exercises while I'm on the elevator. Give me "Nights with Alice Cooper," hosted by Alice himself, anytime. I pick it up on WNNJ, and the guy plays great classics and oddities, tells great stories and is funny as all get-out.
Speaking of classics, here's one to leave you with before you run out for the last-minute cranberry sauce. On Nov. 28 in rock history, according to Wikipedia:
1974 - John Lennon performs onstage at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Elton John, as a result of losing a wager that his song "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" (which Elton also played and sang on) would hit #1 on the pop chart (on November 11). This would also be Lennon's final concert appearance.
I used to always see video of that concert when I went to Beatlefests, and it looked like they were having a great time up there. Remember they did not only "Whatever Gets You..." but also "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There," which I think I still have on a 45, and which Lennon introduced by saying it was written by "an old aunt of mine, called Paul." What a character. Miss that Johnny.
