NYSE, NYSE Arca closed Jan. 2 in honor of former President Gerald R. Ford

By: Ray Pellecchia
File Under: NYSE

I interrupt my hibernation to answer in a timely fashion a question that came in last night:

I hear on tonight's news that Tuesday, Jan 2 is a national day of mourning for for former President Ford. I\'m assuming the NYSE will honor its nearly unbroken tradition and contribute to this day of silence in his honor?

Sunbum -- NYSE (and NYSE Arca) will indeed be closed Tuesday, Jan. 2 for the national day of mourning in honor of former President Ford.

Here's the news release issued just a few minutes ago, from which I excerpt John Thain's statement:

"My NYSE Group colleagues and I join all Americans in mourning the loss of President Ford, a man of great integrity and vision, and a dedicated public servant," said NYSE Group, Inc. CEO John A. Thain. "He assumed a troubled presidency in a critical time, and thoughtfully and skillfully restored credibility and confidence in the presidency. President Ford also made significant contributions to the stability and vitality of the U.S. economy and financial markets. It is appropriate that we honor President Ford and celebrate the life of a truly great American."

For the market historians out there, the news release includes a link to a list of historical market closings in honor of passing presidents.

Thanks for writing, Sunbum. I have other mail to catch up on, but it's been a busy week at home. Will try to get to some later today. If not, as we used to say as kids before Christmas break, see you next year.
