Business summary for October: growing

By: Ray Pellecchia
File Under: Miscellaneous

Here's our monthly NYSE Euronext Business Summary for October 2007.

* Second Busiest Month Ever for European Cash Markets: Vol. Up 61.5% y-o-y
* Busiest Month Ever for European Derivatives Vol., Up 34.5% y-o-y, and New Annual Volume Record with 799 Million Contracts Already Traded This Year
* NYSE Group: Handled Equities Vol. Up 14.4% y-t-d, Handled ETF Vol. Up 70.5%
* NYSE Arca Options: New All-Time Records in Volume and Share of Trading

In other words, business is growing. As an NYX shareholder, I say that's a good thing.

Hope you had a good weekend. A bit of Monday birthday trivia for you:

On This Day in 1872, suffragist Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for attempting to vote in a presidential election.
Historically speaking, it was money well spent.

Today also is the birthday of Art Garfunkel, 66; Peter Noone, 60; Singer; Bryan Adams, 48; and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, 36.
No, I'm not too old to know and like Radiohead.

Ray,
Could you please set the record straight regarding the thought that John Thain is going to go to Citi to take the CEO position?

Just a simple post here re-stating Mr. Thain's lack of desire to leave NYSE Euronext.

Seems daunting to customers and shareholders that the captain might abandon ship. Though he's said publicly that he's not interested in leaving NYX, it'd be useful to see a re-iteration of this sentiment where folks can go to be reminded that his official statement is that he's not leaving.

Thanks in advance.

Ray,
One more question: Did these wonderful October numbers get included in 3Q's results reported last week?

Thanks.

Barry -- Re: City, sorry, NYSE doesn't comment on speculation or rumor, and I'm going to stay with that.

The October data was not in the 3Q financial results released last week, but the record options volume and the inclusion of NYX in the S&P 100 and 500 were mentioned in the qualitative commentary.

Thanks for writing, Barry!

Thanks for the quick reply. I understand the policy about not commenting on rumors/speculation, and wonder why NYX deviated from this policy on March 2, 2007 during the rumors about the SEC's probe into volume. Here's the story from Dow Jones that alludes to NYX's comments on that particular rumor:

Could you help us understand why the company comments on certain rumors, but not others?

Thanks in advance.

"NYSE Group's Thain Denies Rumor Of SEC Probe Into Volume

In a conference call with Prudential Equity Group, NYSE Group Inc. (NYX) Chief Executive John Thain denied the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the New York Stock Exchange, analyst Robert Rutschow said in a note to clients late Thursday.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday the SEC is eying the shrinking of the NYSE's floor and whether it affected the Big Board's ability to handle a surge in trading volume such as occurred on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the matter cited by the newspaper. Shares of the NYSE Group rose 2.5% to $83.78 in recent action."

Barry -- I'm by no means an authority on this, but I think that published (apparently incorrect) reports that the SEC was conducting an investigation were one thing; rumors that seem to come up every time there's a top CEO job vacant on Wall Street are quite another.

when is this NYX stock going to hit $100 ? I am tired of waiting.
